Basecamp is an online community connecting individuals in the outdoor, active lifestyle, and action sports industries.
Through an inclusive, supportive group of tens of thousands of members, a newsletter, a podcast, and other resources, we help a talented workforce grow their careers. We network, post jobs and news, share gear discounts, and talk about the industry in general. Including the important stuff like diversity and the wage gap.
Founded by Ali Carr, Basecamp started as a core group of 200 creatives, writers, public relations folks, and marketers in the outdoor industry in 2017. She used her Rolodex from her time as an editor at Outside magazine to launch Basecamp. Since then, companies and brands in the outdoor industry have hired hundreds of Basecampers and we’ve connected thousands of candidates with the best outdoor opportunities around the globe.
We are proud to be mission-driven, bootstrapped and profitable, female-founded and run, and powered by community.
Basecampers live our passions — surfing, cycling, running, backpacking, yoga, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, mountaineering, and more — and have followed these pursuits into careers. We work to push these sports out into the world, conserve the land we play on, add human representation in all forms to the landscape, and surround ourselves with peers that value the same things we do.
We are the outdoor industry.
The Women Behind Basecamp

Ali Carr, Founder
Ali Carr spent the last year as a Head of Content & Community within Nike’s start-up lab working on a project advocating for women’s realities in pregnancy and postpartum.
She is an award-winning writer and editor with 15+ years experience in the outdoor industry, most notably at Outside magazine, The New York Times, Gear Patrol and more. In 2018, the feature story she wrote about her dad’s disappearance at sea in Outside won a gold medal from the Society of American Travel Writers.
She founded Basecamp in 2017 when she identified that the outdoor industry could use a more dynamic, interactive place to job-hunt — so, naturally, she tapped her network and built one. Ali’s career has not always held one trajectory. She’s also spent time at Microsoft building an editorially-driven app and in public relations for the outdoor industry.
Ali is a firm believer in encouraging people to listen to what resonates with them to create a fulfilling career path and life. She’s also a firm believer in lunchtime runs, office dogs, and advocating to get young girls outside, including her three daughters.
